G1 Contact Sync

adamcecc> something that'd be fun to track with google maps
< person1> Tracking biker gangs via Google Maps?
< adamcecc> "gangs" in general
< adamcecc> seattle coffee beans 4life y0
< adamcecc> you best not brew trouble up in this hood
< person1> I don't think Google HR wants to handle the fallout of tracking gang activity. Engineers go missing, etc.
< adamcecc> might get some shit fixed around gmail
< adamcecc> we want two kilos of coke and contact sync to work man or the pm gets it
< person1> adamcecc: I don't know any engineer who would lift a finger to save their PM :)
< person2> ha trudat
< adamcecc> let them eat gant charts?

G1 Phone initial reactions.

The G1 is a sweet phone a few quirks and some software and it will be the best mobile device I've owned. I'm still not pulling any punches. Review follows.

The Good

The UI is clean and easy to use. I'm a fan of the HTC form factors this will be my third phone with them. The keyboard feels like it isn't going to fall off when you slide it out, my biggest complain with the older HTC models. The UI borrows heavily from the iPhone and apple UI design which comes with quirks but are quickly learned. My biggest one was how to delete the giant clock widget in the center of the phone. Tip: Hold your thumb on it and drag it to the trash icon that appears where the tab used to be. The notifications on the phone are the best I've ever seen not obnoxious and queued up until you look at them. Nearly everything is turned off by default. Updates are pushed down so I don't have to flash my phone to upgrade or lose all my settings. Standard mini usb charger. It functions incredibly well as just a phone. The camera software isn't very good but the camera is if you have it in good lighting. It takes micro SD cards which are changeable and so is the battery.

The Bad

It took a month and a half to get here.
The battery life is poor don't expect to be away from a charger more than a day. I've had to recharge in the last two days.
My phone shipped with the old firmware reboot \n worked just fine.
The login path can be seen if the user forgets to wipe the phone of the grease path.
The app store is easy to use but not much is there I expect this to change come Jan/Feb.
No Exchange support out of the box. (I honestly don't care as I try to minimize my meetings but many people do)

The Ugly

No standard headphone jack you have to use the adapter. This is unacceptable.

Contact sync is horrid and the worst experience I've ever had with moving contacts. There is no PIM software so you have to store you contacts in gmail which requires you to export them somehow. It turns out exporting contacts from Outlook in DOS mode works however if you store a lot of your friends by first name or handle it fails to import the contact. I had to go back and rename contacts from Raven to Raven, Raven for them to properly import. As my friend Divide (who is now Divide, Divide in my phone ) noted there is no way to merge contacts via imports.

After you get your contacts into gmail they are on your phone within a few minutes.

Sante Fe

The family headed to Sante Fe for Thanksgiving to visit my sister and see a bit of Sante Fe. I was a bit of a shutter bug while I was there. Enjoy!

Low Light

Divide gave me a quick lesson on the D90 and low light. I think the results are pretty good.

*adamcecc* of course
*adamcecc* marketing and even if you get a moron a decent parka well keep them reasonably warm
*adamcecc* I'm half tempted to show up with furs and a battle axe, then runoff into the wilderness looking for a purple worm
*adamcecc* Return 3 days later covered in purple goo with blood shot eyes and open wounds
*adamcecc* you know the usual shit i day dream about

Geekout with your SIP out

Saturday Dave, Rahul, and I chilled for a bit and discussed the finer points of dating in Seattle.

I picked up a Nikon D90 and relearned all of the camera lingo thanks to Wikipedia and the manual. I figure if I'm going to travel to the bottom of the world to take pictures and party I might as well have the gear to take decent pictures. I'm already equip to party.

I took a photography class back in hs where I used my dad's ancient camera to take black and white photos. Nothing about the camera was automatic and there really is no feeling like winding film. Everything came back pretty quickly now I just need to get a decent amount of time with the D90 to learn its quirks.

Austin and I played a 6 hour co-op game of Gears of War 2. I've been a bit of a video game junky lately. Resistance 2, Too Human, LittleBigPlanet, Gears of War 2, Left4dead, the new Castlevania title. I'm trying to avoid installing the copy of Fallout 3 a friend gave me. I have a feeling Gears of War 2 is going to be it so I can go back to books for a while.

Sunday morning I ended up at the cafe until 5am. I finally crashed out at 8am.

I got up late and started working on getting Asterisk back online. 2 hours later my voicemail was up, however, the callerid database is still down which is a bummer, but I needed to redo it entirely.

For those of you that were in my phone book in 2006 I entered all of your names and numbers into a small database. Then I created an Asterisk script to read the incoming number to do a lookup in the database. If a file with your first name was present then it would play the file for the custom greeting. A simple parlor trick, but effective at freaking people out. Sadly I didn't make the first version very easy to maintain as new entries were added to my phone book so this time I want to do it right and post the code online.

I also recorded names and parts of the call tree at different times so they have different sound levels and background noises which is highly annoying. I spoke with a few professional VOA people and they recommended the SnowBall usb mic to get started with semi-professional recording. I fully expect to spend 4-8 hours talking into one of these things this week for both my voicemail and the Seattle Trail projects.

Why it seems like I'm eternally awake.

I'm back in my work cycle and have been accused of being a robot again.
Here is my secret when I get in this mode. I sleep twice a day. Normally 3 hours at a time.

From 9am-noon. and from 11pm-2am. Normally those two times are when communication, for me at least, is very low.

When insomnia hits I only do one of those.
When it hits hard I do a 1.5 hour nap.

The schedule shifts constantly +2 hours -3 hours the shifting doesn't matter but I must sleep twice and I can't cross the beams.

I can generally keep this up for a few months at a time. As long as the two nap times don't converge and someone doesn't require me to be somewhere when I should be sleeping. My longest stretch was 7 months in grad school.

When the lines converge I end up sleeping 12-16 hours and the nightmares start again.
Sometimes I do this anyways as it just feels good to sleep that long.

So there humans you now know the secrets of your future robotic overlords.

Social Herpes

Some people occasionally pop into your life and annoy the hell out of you. You have no real reason to hate them and generally they are nice people.

BUT

You interacted with this person once maybe twice a long time ago and they latched on. They come back to annoy you forever. Every time you think they are gone or out of your life they pop up again. Only to cause you to itch and feel uncomfortable for a while and leave again. I want to start these conversations with "Look I was young and dumb and a little too friendly back then can you please just go away. I really have no beef with you but god you make me uncomfortable"

No they are with you forever.

They are your social herpes.
